You may simply make a single initial investment and make no further contributions, or you can make an initial investment and follow that with periodic contributions. The calculator demonstrates the enormous power of compound interest on a simple investment program.

Simply enter your present age and the age at which you want to stop investing (most likely your retirement age). Then enter the amount of your first investment (this can be your only investment). Then, at your option, you can make further periodic contributions to your investment account, in which case you must enter the amount of each periodic contribution as well as how often you will make contributions throughout each year.
